ANDREW DISCOVERED THIS FIRST-HAND IN 1968

“Shortly after I joined De Beers as a trainee diamond buyer,

a tin of rough diamonds was accidentally dropped down a three-storey lift shaft.

We recovered what we could from the bottom -

but after weighing them, a surprising number were still missing.

Then someone looked up.

Diamonds were stuck all the way up the lift shaft, wherever they had

touched the greasy cables and framework as they fell.

I never forgot just how strongly diamond is attracted to grease.”
